The PHYSICS project, held its 8th General Assembly meeting on November 8th – 9th, 2023, in Florence, Italy. Hosted by GFT, the meeting provided an opportunity for partners to present updates on task progress and deliverables, as well as discuss upcoming project results. The coordinator and leaders of the work packages (WP) led discussions on any outstanding issues, fostering active participation and constructive feedback.

The meeting was conducted using a hybrid format, accommodating both in-person and remote attendees. Among the meeting’s key objectives were the status of PHYSICS’ 2nd Iteration Pilot Implementation, the finalization of the Final Review demo, and the definition of the Final Review agenda and logistics.

ABSTRACT

The ability to split applications across different locations in the continuum (edge/cloud) creates needs for application break down into smaller and more distributed chunks. In this realm the Function as a Service approach appears as a significant enabler in this process. The paper presents a visual function and workflow development environment for complex FaaS (Apache OpenwhisK) applications. The environment offers a library of pattern based and reusable nodes and flows while mitigating function orchestration limitations in the domain. Generation of the deployable artefacts, i.e. the functions, is performed through embedded DevOps pipelines. A range of annotations are available for dictating diverse options including QoS needs, function or data locality requirements, function affinity considerations etc. These are propagated to the deployment and operation stacks for supporting the cloud/edge interplay. The mechanism is evaluated functionally through creating, registering and executing functions and orchestrating workflows, adapting typical parallelization patterns and an edge data collection process.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we report our experiences from the migration of an AI model inference process, used in the context of an E-health platform to the Function as a Service model. To that direction, a performance analysis is applied, across three available Cloud or Edge FaaS clusters based on the open source Apache Openwhisk FaaS platform. The aim is to highlight differences in performance based on the characteristics of each cluster, the request rates and the parameters of Openwhisk. The conclusions can be applied for understanding the expected behavior of the inference function in each of these clusters as well as the effect of the Openwhisk execution model. Key observations and findings are reported on aspects such as function execution duration, function sizing, wait time in the system, network latency and concurrent container overheads for different load rates. These can be used to detect in a black box manner capabilities of unknown clusters, guide or fine-tune performance models as well as private cloud FaaS deployment setup.

The 5th PHYSICS project General Assembly meeting was held on November 15th – 16th, 2022 in Madrid, Spain and was hosted by ATOS.
Partners had the opportunity to update the consortium on the progress of different tasks and deliverables, and further discuss any open issues. Led by the coordinator and WP leaders, the consortium also discussed feedback generated by the project’s review and future plans regarding the third and final year of the PHYSICS project. The meeting was organized in a hybrid mode.

PHYSICS project has just terminated its first Impact Intensification period, in which efforts were further pursued to increase the external involvement in the project activities. This doesn’t mean that the project remains idle in other periods; but in September specifically, partners collectively reach out to stakeholders to build an online connected community, leveraging expertise in social media strategy and existing partner networks. In order to boost this first round, three hackathons have been scheduled, with a pool of selected participants to test the Physics platform and give feedbacks.

The first hackathon will take place from the 23 until the 25 of November. The first day will be a small session to launch the activity and assign mentors. Participants are mostly students, which have a general overview about the scope and tasks to be developed, as well as links to all the necessary information

There will be two challenges: one called Runtime Challenge, which main objective is to provide ideas about how to orchestrate workflows during runtime. The other it’s the Security Challenge, where a group of Cybersecurity experts will evaluate platform vulnerabilities and provide easy ways to solve them. The rest of the time, participants will interact with their assigned mentors off-line. Once the deadline expires, they will provide the code and a small pitch introducing their solution.

Then, jury will evaluate all proposals: each of the members of the jury will assign points for each of the evaluation criteria to pick the winner.

This first experience will be followed by two more sessions in early 2023.

But that’s not all is cooking for PHYSICS; the consortium has organized a clustering webinar with CHARITY project, which will take place on the 29th of November, to introduce and demonstrate the design environment.

A workshop about the three-project pilots is scheduled for early 2023, to present and share more hands-on results. As of October 2022, we are proud of the obtained results, with PHYSICS Reusable Artefact Marketplace up and running, 26 registered users and 15 artefacts already integrated.

PHYSICS and CHARITY projects aim to improve the ability of application developers and service providers to create and deploy advanced applications for the Cloud2Edge Continuum as CHARITY addresses XR applications, PHYSICS serverless (FaaS) applications.

CHARITY provides an environment to facilitate the composition of application blueprints,
specifying component microservices, resource slices and virtual links into a TOSCA template, ready for the runtime orchestrator to provision and manage its lifecycle.
PHYSICS offers a design environment allowing to graphical create abstract annotated workflows of composite applications, that the platform later translates into actionable FaaS sequences, in a DevOps chain allowing local pre-deployment functional testing

Both projects provide advanced lifecycle management of deployed applications,
able to dynamically control and optimize the allocation of application components based
on their respective KPIs.
