Abstract

Towards enabling the automated and optimized FaaS deployment of applications in a hybrid-cloud setting, the application requirements should be met by comparing them to the capabilities of the available resources of available clusters. To this end, semantic matching between the application characteristics and the individual descriptions of available compute clusters (e.g. from public or private cloud or edge facilities available) is required. In this work, such a system is proposed, namely the Reasoning Framework, which performs semantic matching between application and resource (meta)data and facilitates information sharing among the FaaS platform components lever- aging Knowledge Graphs, ontology technologies, and semantic reasoning. The proposed system harvests information from the application function workflow, provided as a graph by the function editor specification (based on Node-RED), including developer-inserted annotations during the design process, and maps them to the dynamic information retrieved from the available clusters. The Reasoning Framework interprets these data as graphs and automatically applies several semantic rules that enable filtering of the available resources and efficient information retrieval through a RESTfull interface. The paper also discusses experimental results to further showcase the advantages of the proposed approach.

Abstract

Scaling ACID transactions in a cloud database is hard, and providing elastic scalability even harder. In this paper, we present our solution for elastic scalable transaction processing in LeanXcale, an industrial-strength NewSQL database system. Unlike previous solutions, it does not require any hardware assistance. Yet, it does scales linearly to 100s of servers. LeanXcale supports non-intrusive elasticity and can move data partitions without hurting the quality of service of transaction management. We show the correctness of LeanXcale transaction management. Finally, we provide a thorough performance evaluation of our solution on Amazon Web Services (AWS) shared cloud instances. The results show linear scalability, e.g., 5 million TPC-C NewOrder TPM with 200 nodes, which is greater than the TPC-C throughput obtained by the 9th highest result in all history using dedicated hardware used exclusively (not shared like in our evaluation) for the benchmark. Furthermore, the efficiency in terms of TPM per core is double that of the two top TPC-C results (also the only results in a cloud).

Abstract

Ontologies have become the de-facto information representation method in the semantic web domain, but recently gained popularity in other domains such as cloud computing. In this context, ontologies enable service discovery, effective comparison and selection of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS offerings and ease the application deployment process by tackling what is known as the vendor lock-in problem. In this paper we propose a novel ontology named HOCC: holistic ontology for effective cluster comparison. The ontology design process is based on four different information categories, namely Performance, SLA, cost and environmental impact. In addition we present our approach for populating, managing and taking advantage of the proposed ontology as developed in a real world Kubernetes cluster setting, as well as instantiating the ontology with example services and data (namely performance aspects of a serverless function).
