The goal of this deliverable is the description of the PHYSICS project architecture. This is the first version of the architecture foreseen in the project. This document will be a live document that will be enriched as the project progresses till the second and last version of the architecture is delivered in month 23. The PHYSICS architecture is developed as part of the work package WP2, Requirements, Architecture and Technical Coordination.
The architecture of PHYSICS consists of a set of software components that are developed in three technical work packages (W3 Functional and Semantic Continuum Services Framework, WP4 Cloud Platform Services for a Global Space-Time Continuum Interplay and WP5 Extended Infrastructure Services with Adaptable Algorithms) which correspond to the three foreseen levels of the PHYSICS platform: application level, platform level and infrastructure level. The PHYSICS architecture has been defined based on the study of state of the art and the requirements definition. The architecture is described using a functional view in which description of each software component is provided, as well as the interactions among them. This functional description presents for each component its definition, challenges the component has to deal with, input received and produced output. Hence, it provides the structuring principles that will drive the integration of the PHYSICS components in a unified platform. As such the PHYSICS architecture will drive integration activities towards producing the PHYSICS platform and integrating the use cases. As already outlines, future releases of the architecture will incorporate feedback from the updated design of the various components, as well as for the actual use of the first version of the architecture in integration and use case activities.

The aim of this deliverable is to provide the groundwork for the entire PHYSICS project by defining and analysing all relevant state of the art technologies, solutions and current research works. In parallel with this, it will also present the documentation of the functional and non-functional requirements of the PHYSICS project that will be used and tracked throughout the life of the project.
The state-of-the-art analysis follows the PHYSICS architectural components so as to ensure that there is a full documentation and a know-how establishment for each part of the technical aspects of the PHYSICS project. These architectural components are directly derived from the envisioned PHYSICS architecture as it is described in the proposal, thus following to the letter the promised solution and ensuring a smooth transition from this initial architecture to the implementation and integration by having already analyzed all possible technological candidates to be used throughout the project.

Deliverable D2.1 performs an analysis on the FaaS market in terms of size, growth, profitability, cost structures, trends and critical success factors identifying gaps and potential for impact. The document specifies and analyses the most valuable prospects, aiming to provide a factual introductory basis for the requirements, technical choices, architecture, and exploitation activities within WP2 and WP7.
Deliverable D2.1 explores and outlines PHYSICS technologies’ market and the potential for impact where gaps are identified. Building upon the insights derived from the analysis conducted in the first chapters, the document specifies core challenges to overcome and the corresponding critical success factors in order to offer a value proposition which can create gains and relief pains to end-users according to their needs and aspirations.
